Cast alnico magnets are produced by foundry technology. It is a simple technique, which has been widely used since World War II. In general, metal material is melt in the furnace and become liquid which is mixed and alloy in a san mould. After certain rough machining and thermo processing, the material will become magnetic. Finally, finish products come out after being fine finished.
Cast alnico is suitable to manufacture complicated-shape and big-size magnets. The forming technique is simpler. However, tolerance of the blank is big, so commonly, casting alnico needs post processing. Because it is alloyed through metal liquid, comparing with sintered alnico, it has bigger density. Also, its permanent magnet performance is more excellent than sintered one.
Complicated-shape casting alnico can be manufactured, as long as sand mould is fine designed during production. Nevertheless, it is confined to molding precision of casting alnico. Some extremely complicated shape cannot be produced, because, when cooling, alnico will distort a bit during sand molding.
Basic elements of cast alnico are similar to those of sintered alnico permanent magnets. Also, there is a technique called poring-crystallization. During pouring of casting alnico, poring-crystallization controls cooling direction and speed, which makes crystal particles, obviously improving magnetic property of cast alnico.
