In 1979, American scientist Klaus Halbach developed a new design---Halbach Array. Compared with the conventional permanent magnets, the magnetic field of Halbach is a one-sided field. Consequently, this kind of array can be applied to motor to amplify air-gap magnetic flux density, thus improve the efficiency and reduce the loss of eddy. Below are the advantages of Halbach motor:
1) High Power Intensity
As the magnetic field of transverse and diameter direction overlapping, the magnetic intensity improves greatly. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the size of motor and enhance the power intensity.
2) Without Inclined Groove
With the sinusoidal distributed air-gap magnetic filed in Halbach motor, there are less harmonic waves. So there is no need of inclined groove in stator and rotor to reduce its effect.
3) Non-magnetic Materials of Rotor
With the one-sided field in Halbach array, the permanent magnetic materials in rotor are not necessary, and more superior materials of rotor can be chosen.
4) Long Length Value of Air-gap
Theoretically, the air-gap magnetic flux density of Halbach can be almost 10,000 times than common magnet. In this way, increasing the length value of it can reduce the loss and perfect the performance of motor.
5) Full Utilization of Permanent Magnets
Since the special magnetized direction of each Halbach permanent magnet, the operating point is relative high, which surpass 0.9 averagely. Thus, the utilization of magnets increased greatly.
6) Centralized Winding
The common motor always to decrease harmonic waves by distributed winding, while Halbach motor can use centralized way for its sinusoidal distributed magnetic field.
