Magnetic Materials
Invention and development of magnetic coupling are closely related to new permanent magnetic materials that constantly appear. But due to poor performance, comparing with traditional couplings in the same sizes, they can only transfer small torque, which limits development of magnetic couplings. SmCo and Alnico magnetic materials, belonging to the second generation of permanent magnetic materials, have better magnetic performance than that of ferrite, so magnetic couplings made of these two materials can transfer bigger torque. However, reserves of samarium, cobalt and nickel are few, which are scarce and expensive strategic materials, leading to high price. Therefore, development of magnetic couplings is constrained. Neodymium magnet of which maximum energy product can reach 286KJ/m, becomes the third generation of permanent magnetic materials. Not only are performances of neodymium magnets better, but it has rich resource. Meanwhile, with high energy product, less usage, rich resource and nice process-ability, it can be cut, whittled and drilled, which reduces sizes of magnetic couplings, decrease cost, improve efficiency and save energy. Now, it has been widely applied to magnetic couplings.
Application Field
One of the successful applications is the combination between magnetic couplings and magnetic pumps. Previously, as expensive and special products, it is used only if necessary. But it has a wide range of applications, including petroleum and chemicals, medicines, movies, electroplating, nuclear power, semiconductor, food and biology. Magnetic couplings find the way into these fields and magnetic pumps are a big market of magnetic materials.
General Situation of Home and Overseas
With development of magnetic materials and appearance of new magnetic materials, magnetic coupling will have bigger torques, smaller sizes and wider application. Besides pumps and reaction kettle, magnetic couplings can be used in valves, hydraulic cylinders and air cylinders. It is estimated that magnetic couplings will have a broad market prospect.
Developed countries have set standards of magnetic couplings. Although this technology started late in China, it develops rapidly in recent decade. Improvement of performance, in particular, provides an opportunity for magnetic couplings. Currently, some manufacturers of permanent magnets materials expand category of magnetic products of their own.
