New Solution for Oil Leakage - Magnetism Can Separate Oil and Water

According to foreign media, scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently develop a new technology that can separate oil and water with magnetic force. Researchers believe that the new technology can effectively resolve problems of oil leakage. Also, not only can it reduce cost of cleaning oil leakage but the oil leaking out can be recycled and reused.
Based on plans of the research team, with mixture of water-proof ferrous nano-particles and oil, magnetism can separate oil from water. In the plan, researchers design an oil skimmer which can prevent pollution caused by nano-particles. Then, ferrous nano-particles will be separated from oil with magnetic force and can be reused. Before, there were many studies on separation between oil and water, including many researches on ferrous magnetic fluid. The research team transforms the traditional methods. They use cylinder permanent magnet. Because magnetic field is the strongest in two poles of cylinder magnets, magnetic force of cylinder magnets is more powerful in two ends than that in two sides.
The research team has simulated this process in laboratory. Magnetic deposits are embedded in the bottom of reservoir where there are a great deal of mixture of water and oil which contains ferrous nano-particles. In this way, oil will not gather around the magnets. When permanent magnets are above water, oil will form lots of globe-shaped objects on both sides of magnets. Though the design is quite simple, it can perfectly separate water and oil. The simpler the process and technology in the sea is, the better the work of recycling leaking oil is. Because of shortage of electricity and equipment in the sea, simpler systems and methods can do better, which can work for a long time as well.
During the experiment, the research team also designs a special arrangement for magnets. They arrange the magnets into Halbach array, which can peel oil off the cylinder magnets. In one side of such array, the magnetic force is near zero, but in the other side, the strength of magnetic force is as strong as twice. In the experiment, oil is not attracted to the bottom of the array but the top and separated from the cylinder magnets.
Researchers believe that degree of mixture of oil and water will affect the method to some extent. We cannot judge the degree of oil and water only by naked eyes, so the method should be experienced a great deal. In industry, using a boat to separate oil and water may be better. Problems of oil leakage are never appropriately resolved. But with magnetic force, separation of will become faster. Then, on the boat, mixture of oil and water can become ferrous magnetic liquid, and be separated by technology of magnetic field separation. At least, this technology can be realized in small-scale experiences.
